Heating and cooling of the building is achieved through an air-water heat pump system with the use of underfloor heating, thus achieving optimum thermal comfort conditions. Domestic hot water is available on demand from the heat pump and also from a solar collector.

On the building's roof a photovoltaic system with net-metering is installed. The energy output of the photovoltaic system covers annually almost 100% of the building’s needs for heating, cooling and lighting.

A building management system (BMS) is installed, controlling and monitoring the building's mechanical and electrical equipment such as the heat-pump, ventilation, lighting, external blinds and security systems.

A water management system is installed outdoors. The rainwater is collected, filtered and fed into the sewer system as well as the automatic garden watering system.

Project A+ is designed to meet the modern housing needs that require high aesthetic level, but also low operating costs. This combination is accomplished through the design of the house as a zero energy building (energy class A +).
Within this context, the orientation of the internal spaces was carefully studied in order to allow the maximum exploitation of natural light. The larger openings are facing towards the south, while smaller openings are strategically placed in the north in order to achieve natural cross-ventilation.
External insulation combined with insulating bricks was used on the building’s envelope. The windows are highly efficient with triple glazed low emissivity panes. For the sufficient air- tightness of the building, special tapes were used between the window frames and the walls.
For the efficient sun protection of the building, external aluminum blinds were placed, which are automatically adjusted according to the time and place of the sun, achieving a significant reduction of the cooling load.
A mechanical ventilation heat recovery system (MHRV) is installed in the building, supplying it with fresh filtered air 24hrs a day. At the same time, the air from the kitchen and bathrooms is removed along with the odors and dust, eliminating any chance of developing mould inside the building.
